The rules for using Numis

Last updated: 4 October 2026

What Numis is for

Numis is a register of households in Papua New Guinea. Survey teams record each house and the people who live there. This helps the government understand who lives where. It also helps the government plan services and work out what settlements need. Records may also be used for other purposes the law allows. See the privacy notice.

Who uses Numis

Authorised survey teams record households. HQ is the head office that runs the survey. HQ checks every household. Records that need a closer look are checked first. HQ prints a register card only after it verifies the household. Only households an officer has verified are counted in Area figures on age and work. The public cannot create records in Numis. Only an authorised surveyor can create a household's record. The surveyor must first read the required notice to the household. The notice explains what is recorded and why.

Record only what is true

Survey teams must record only what they see and what the household tells them about itself. Records are used to make planning decisions, so they must be correct.
